Stephen Chbosky is best know for penning The Perks of Being a Wallflower screenplay, adapted from his own novel of the same name. It's because of him that Emma Watson may actually sign on for the lead in this take on the tale to be directed by The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1 and The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2 director Bill Condon.
At this time, Emma Watson is not officially signed on. She is still loosely attached to Warner Bros.' adaptation of the fairy tale, which hasn't moved forward at the studio since she was announced. Stephen Chbosky and Emma Watson were originally set to reunite on While We're Young.
Beauty and the Beast follows Belle, whose father is taken prisoner by the Beast. She offers to take her father's place and discovers her captor to be an enchanted prince. It was originally written by 18th century author Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve. This project will actually be based on Disney's 1991 adaptation and promises to feature some of the same songs. Evan Spiliotopoulos wrote the original draft, which is being reworked by Stephen Chbosky .
Stephen Chbosky previously wrote Columbia Pictures' musical drama Rent and directed a handful of episode of Jericho. No production schedule has been released.
