'Uncharted' Will Begin Shooting in Early 2015

After being stuck in development for several years, the video game adaptation Uncharted is finally moving in the right direction, with Seth Gordon coming on board to direct back in February. While the production still hasn't found the right actor to play Nathan Drake yet, the filmmaker revealed that production will start in early 2015.

"I think very early next year. That's the plan. That's like tomorrow, essentially, because the prep is so complicated for the movie."

The director added that they, "just got the script to a really good place," while adding that the movie will be "very international" with settings "all over the world." David Guggenheim (Safe House) wrote the most recent draft of the screenplay.

The project is adapted from the hit Naughty Dog video game that follows treasure hunter Nathan Drake, a descendant of Sir Francis Drake, who sets off on a quest to find the famed city of El Dorado, which is entirely made out of gold.

Mark Wahlberg was once attached to star as Drake, but the director revealed that he is still searching for a great actor to inhabit the role.

"I want it to be a great actor. That's number one, and then if it's someone who has an actual jaw, that's even better. The game is so well done that you need it to live up to that. There's no way we'd do the inverse of that where it's somebody famous who can't [act]."

When asked if he was considering casting a TV star as Nathan Drake, like he did in previous movies Horrible Bosses (Charlie Day) and Identity Thief (Melissa McCarthy), the filmmaker had this to say.

"I think that worked really well for Horrible Bosses. Obviously, I'm a fan of that kind of transition. There's a lot of great shows on that expose me to actors I would not have known otherwise."

While the director wouldn't reveal any specific story details, he did say that Uncharted will honor certain elements of the video game.

"It's going to honor the mythology of the game, but I would say honor some of the most interesting stuff from the first one and build from there. There's some stuff that isn't in the game. I love the complexity and frankly the sophistication of the storytelling in the game, and we aspire to that -- but don't want to tell the exact same story, of course -- so something that doesn't break the rules of what it did but expands. Because I feel like the people who play the games and know them well don't want to just see the same story told. You want extra shades."
