Len Wiseman (Total Recall) was initially attached to direct before he bowed out, paving the way for Andres Muschietti (Mama) to come on board before he left in May. However, both of those filmmakers were on board before this inter-connected monster universe was hatched. The Mummy Reboot will be the first project launched within this cinematic universe, setting the tone for those that come after it.
While no plot details have been confirmed, insiders claim that the project is set in present day, with a whole new set of characters. The reboot is said to be more of an action-adventure with horror elements, instead of a straight-up horror vehicle.
Jon Spaihts (Prometheus) previously worked on the script, with Alex Kurtzman and his former writing/producing partner Roberto Orci also taking a crack at the script.
Here's what Universal's co-president of production, Jeff Kirschenbaum, had to say about Alex Kurtzman in a statement.
"Over the course of developing The Mummy, Alex has demonstrated such clarity and passion about this character and mythology. He knows why The Mummy has fascinated us for so long and how to bring that into an inventive, incredible new adventure. It became obvious that he is the perfect choice to be not only one of the narrative engineers of this new vision but its director as well."
No production schedule was given. Alex Kurtzman made his directorial debut with the 2012 drama People Like Us, and he is currently attached to direct the Venom spin-off for Sony Pictures, but that project currently doesn't have a spot on Sony's release calendar as of yet.
Untitled Mummy Reboot comes to theaters April 22nd, 2016. The film is directed by Alex Kurtzman
