'X-Men: Days of Future Past' Earns $36 Million on Opening Day

While some speculated that X-Men: Days of Future Past would beat Godzilla as the biggest opening day release of 2014, it fell short by a few million dollars. Godzilla managed to pull in $38.4 million when it opened last weekend, with the latest X-Men franchise sequel only managing to nab $36 million.

This actually gives X-Men: Days of Future Past the third biggest opening of the year, as it also comes in behind Marvel Studios' Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which took in a close $36.9 million back in April. It did, however, best the other recent Marvel movie, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, now in fourth place with $35.1 million.

X-Men: Days of Future Past made $8.1 million of its $36 million from Thursday night preview screenings, and is estimated to pull in a little less than $120 million over the Memorial Day weekend, with strong word of mouth helping up Saturday and Sunday numbers. That extra day doesn't hurt either.

20th Century Fox's franchise sequel is aiming to be one of the top 5 Memorial Day weekend earners of all time, but it's not likely to surpass the $122 million Memorial Day weekend X-Men: The Last Stand pulled in back in the summer of 2006.
X-Men: Days of Future Past was released May 23rd, 2014 and stars Hugh Jackman, James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Halle Berry, Nicholas Hoult, Anna Paquin, Ellen Page. The film is directed by Bryan Singer.
