'The Raid' Remake Begins Shooting This September

Nearly three years after it was first announced in November 2011, production will begin on Screen Gems' The Raid remake this September, according to a report from Deadline.

Patrick Hughes, who is currently at the Cannes Film Festival promoting this summer's The Expendables 3, is directing from a screenplay by Brad Ingelsby (Out of the Furnace, Run All Night), although no cast members have been confirmed at this time. There has been a rumor that Screen Gems is eyeing brothers Chris Hemsworth and Liam Hemsworth for unspecified roles, although that has not been confirmed.

Gareth Evans directed the original Indonesian classic The Raid: Redemption, which follows a group of Jakarta cops lead by Rama (Iko Uwais) who mount a raid in a 30-story building filled with the city's most dangerous criminals. The filmmaker also directed this year's sequel, The Raid 2, where Rama went deep undercover to infiltrate a dangerous crime organization.

During a recent interview with Collider, director Patrick Hughes had this to say about the project, which he hopes will "match the action" of the original movie and its sequel, while revealing that its set within the DEA.

"It's a really fun project. We're in pre-production, we're in early days at the moment, but one thing is it probably feels like it's got a broader landscape to it. Obviously I'm a huge fan of the original, the action is phenomenal, and if anything we're looking to match the action, but also to have a really distinct take on it. I'm really interested because it's set within the world of the DEA fast teams, so what's really interesting is that clash of culture and clash of fighting styles. That's a project that we're really excited about."
The Raid comes to theaters in 2014. The film is directed by Patrick Hughes.
