Quicksilver Will Return in 'X-Men: Apocalypse'; Will Scarlet Witch Join Him?

With X-Men: Days of Future Past hitting theaters this weekend, many fans are already looking ahead to X-Men: Apocalypse, which was first announced back in December. We know that Bryan Singer is coming back to direct, with a story that focuses on the younger characters from X-Men: Days of Future Past and X-Men: First Class. Producer Simon Kinberg revealed in an interview with Total Film that Evan Peters will be back as Quicksilver in X-Men: Apocalypse, and that we may be seeing his sister Scarlet Witch as well, who was initially alluded to in X-Men: Days of Future Past.

"We talked about bringing Scarlet With into the mix for this film, and there was actually a little scene we shot that we ended up cutting from the movie that alluded to her. But it was a sort of interstitial scene that didn't push the movie forward, and so it ended up being cut, like lots of bits and pieces in a movie that's this complicated and with this many characters to follow. But he would absolutely be back for the next X-Men movie."

The scene Simon Kinberg is referring to was first teased in a photo released by Empire back in January, when it was believed that the young girl pictured alongside Evan Peters was Scarlet Witch. However, director Bryan Singer clarified last month that it isn't Scarlett Witch, but the mutant siblings' younger sister.

Simon Kinberg also spoke about the "controversy" that happened when they announced Quicksilver would be a part of X-Men: Days of Future Past, just after the character was announced as a part of Marvel Studios' Avengers: Age of Ultron. Both Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch's rights are shared by 20th Century Fox and Marvel Studios, although Fox can't reference the siblings' mutant history, and Marvel can't bring up their X-Men story lines. Simon Kinberg had this to say when asked about the fan's reaction to Quicksilver coming on board.

"It wasn't something we anticipated, because we didn't know they were using him in The Avengers movie. It got publicized weeks after we made the decision that we had done it, and then after that even, I think it was a little while before the controversy started in terms of them using him too."

Our report from December also revealed that the story will be set in the 1970s, with James McAvoy's Charles Xavier and Michael Fassbender's Magneto at the heart of this story, although another story from March revealed that the story is set in the 1980s, with director Bryan Singer hinting that the plot revolves around ancient mutants. Last week, Channing Tatum was confirmed to star as the mutant Gambit in this highly-anticipated adventure.
X-Men: Days of Future Past comes to theaters May 23rd, 2014 and stars Hugh Jackman, James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Halle Berry, Nicholas Hoult, Anna Paquin, Ellen Page. The film is directed by Bryan Singer.
