Hugh Jackman May Shoot 'X-Men: Apocalypse' and 'Wolverine 3' Back-to-Back

During a recent interview for X-Men: Days of Future Past, Hugh Jackman hinted that he may shoot Wolverine 3 and X-Men: Apocalypse back-to-back. When asked by Collider if it would be easier to maintain his physique to shoot both movies back-to-back, here's what he had to say.

"No, in a weird way that has crossed my mind if that's the way things play out, because physically, even though I was complaining about it because I found out about [X-Men: Days of Future Past] a month before I finished The Wolverine, so I was already planning on my cheat meals. It's much easier because it's tough to get there, physically, but once you're there, it's easier to maintain it."

While that isn't exactly a confirmation of back-to-back shooting, producer Lauren Shuler Donner said that they are trying to make the production scheduled work.

"We're trying. Well, we announced Apocalypse to come out in 2016, so that means we have to shoot next summer. And then we'd have to shoot our new Wolverine movie either before or after that. I think after because it will come out after."

Producer Hutch Parker reiterated this plan, but it all comes down to getting the script right.

"And as much as you have an ambition for these things, it is, as you said about Hugh, getting a script that everybody feels is ready and right. Because that is the foundation on which everything is built. So I think the goal will be Apocalypse for 2016, which means at the latest [filming begins] in summer 2015, and then the same thing with Wolverine, either before or after, but based on the script."

Hugh Jackman revealed last month that he was "99.9% sure" Wolverine 3 will be his last outing as the character, following his comments in March that Wolverine will eventually be re-cast. If all goes to plan, fans will see Hugh Jackman in X-Men: Apocalypse in 2016, with Wolverine 3 following in 2017.

In a separate interview, Hugh Jackman also spoke about the upcoming Wolverine 3, a follow-up to X-Men Origins: Wolverine and The Wolverine which he is developing with director James Mangold. While he wouldn't confirm any specific details about the story, the actor did tease that this project takes the popular character in a completely different direction.

"There is another one we're looking at, which I don't want to tell you because we're actually working on it, but as soon as I can, I will. I'm working on that with (The Wolverine director) James Mangold, and I'm really excited about the direction we're going. It takes Wolverine in a completely different head space, world space and in every way, it's different than anything you've seen before. There are some requirements for me. It has to be a great script and something surprising."

We first reported on this project back in November 2013, but just one month later, the actor revealed that he would only come back if the story meets his high expectations.

The April report also teased that Hugh Jackman and James Mangold may adapt the Old Man Logan story line, an eight-issue comic book arc by Mark Millar from 2008 that is set 50 years in the future and features an aging Logan who has refused to use his claws after an attack by a group of villains. This would be a tricky property to adapt, though, since it includes several characters owned by Marvel Studios, including Hulk, Hawkeye, Iron Man, Kingpin and Red Skull.
