Hugh Jackman Is 99.9% Sure 'Wolverine 3' Will Be His Last 'X-Men' Movie

In early March, actor Hugh Jackman teased that he may soon retire as Wolverine in the lucrative X-Men franchise for 20th Century Fox. Though The Wolverine director James Mangold had signed onto return for Wolverine 3, Jackman wasn't so sure he would be back, hoping to hand off the role to someone else. He would only agree to take on the sequel if the story was perfect. Later that month, David James Kelly was hired to write the script, and it seemed that Hugh Jackman had finally agreed to appear in the spinoff sequel. But not so fast! According to the actor, who is now promoting his seventh turn as Logan in X-Men: Days of Future Past, he still hasn't signed on.

Not only that, he says that if he does agree to return, which is very likely, it will surely be his last turn as the healing mutant with adamantium claws. How sure is he? 99.9%! This is what he had to saw when asked if he was coming back for Wolverine 3.

"I don't know yet. We're talking it through. I still am very ambitious for the character. And tonally I feel like we corrected the ship with the last one. But I feel we can still go further, in a way. If I did another one I'm 99.9% sure it would be the last, so that will inform what it is for me."

In his conversation with SFX, the actor claims that he and James Mangold are currently looking at Mark Millar's 'Old Man Logan' story arc. Also, it will not take place in Japan.

"Of course we're looking at Old Man Logan, because that may be the only option left at this point! [laughs] We are looking at a lot of different storylines. No one has jumped out. You can tell from my answer that we're still working it out."

The storyline of 'Old Man Logan' would have to be drastically changed, as it features a number of characters currently owned by Marvel Studios.

Last week, Marvel announced that they are killing off the Wolverine character in a four-part series debuting this September. The story finds Logan stripped of his healing powers that have kept him alive for decades upon decades. Its possible that Wolverine 3 could incorporate some of these elements in the movie. It would be a perfect way to have the character killed off on-screen so that it can be properly rebooted in the future. Its possible that Hugh Jackman wasn't yet aware of Marvel's plans when he did this interview.
Wolverine 3 comes to theaters March 3rd, 2017 and stars Hugh Jackman. The film is directed by James Mangold.
