'Captain America 3' Confirms May 2016 Release, Opening Against 'Batman Vs. Superman'

Following our report from last month that Captain America 3 will go up against Batman Vs. Superman in 2016, Marvel has confirmed the sequel's May 6, 2016 release date. Take a look at the studio's official announcement below, then read on for more details about this Marvel Phase Three sequel.

In related news, directors Anthony Russo and Joe Russo, who have already been confirmed to direct Captain America 3, revealed more about the sequel's story on the Empire podcast.

When asked if he sees Sebastian Stan's character as The Winter Soldier or as Bucky Barnes, Anthony Russo had this to say, comparing Bucky's story arc to the classic John Ford Western The Searchers.

"That's a great question, especially as we start to think about Captain America 3. I don't know if you remember The Searchers, a great John Wayne movie about settlers who are kidnapped by Indians in the American West and held for a couple of years and then stolen back to the settlers. That's a story that wasn't uncommon in the old West. It happened several times and you had this phenomena where people who had been taken, if they were ever retrieved, sometimes, they didn't know who they belonged to anymore. Their identities were fractured and they weren't quite the person they were before they were kidnapped, but perhaps they weren't Indian as well. I think that's really analagous to where Bucky is. He had an identity that Cap was best friends with and he went on to have a totally different identity. Is he Bucky? Is he Winter Soldier? Or is he something in between?"

Joe Russo also revealed that Captain America 3 will feature a continuation of Bucky's story.

"We've had discussions with (writers) (Christopher) Markus and (Stephen) McFeely. The most that we can say about it at this point, is that Bucky's story is not finished. It's an introduction to Bucky's story. So if you want to guess at what that movie will be about..you can assume this will be a continuation of Bucky's story."

Finally, writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely revealed in a new interview with Collider that they have been working on the Captain America 3 screenplay for over a year now. Here's what Christopher Markus had to say, regarding when they first came on board for this sequel.

"As this was firming up in post-production to feel special, we were getting excited, to the point that a third seemed financially advisable. Then we started talking about it in earnest and we started talking about schedule. I won't say what the schedule is, but it became imperative to get people on board."

When asked how far along they were in the story process, Christopher Markus revealed that it's still early days for them.

"We're in the have idea, test it out, throw it up, try another one, throw it out phase, which is invaluable. It's coalescing into the movie it's supposed to be. We have now an embarrassment of interesting characters to deal with, and we don't to have a superhero team. You have to get a plot that gets everybody in motion and yet keep Cap at the title."

Stephen McFeely added that they have read the script for Avengers: Age of Ultron, which helps them in determining where to go next for Cap.

"We read it. We need to know where Cap is in between the movies. I'm very pleased with the way Joss (Whedon) handled Cap. I'm pleased where we can get him, and I have no complaints about what we can do."
Captain America 3 comes to theaters May 6th, 2016. The film is directed by Anthony Russo, Joe Russo.
